In this special presentation, based on The Wit’s exclusive data and research, Virginia Mouseler will tell us what now she calls TV in 2019.
She’ll answer the top questions everyone asks:
– Is TV still dead?
– Is it still the golden age of drama?
– Is non-scripted content still toneless?
– Is the next big format coming back anytime soon?
– What do viewers really want?
– What are the creative trends in non-scripted and content trends for the new season?
Reasoned and objective answers to these questions will help content creators and distributors make the right business strategy leading to success and profit.

Сhanges that have been discussed for a long time by professionals of Ukrainian TV market – аnalogue switch-off, encryption of satellite signal of TV channels of four Ukrainian TV groups, language quotas, state funding of series production and many other things – now become a reality.
Success and radical impact on the media sector of platforms such as Amazon and Netflix, as well as other global trends, also bring changes to the development strategies of Ukrainian broadcasters in own production and acquisitions on local and international markets.
How will the guidelines of Ukrainian TV channels change in the context of the changing rules of the game in the domestic and global markets? How will the panel react, will the audience preferences change and what formats should one bet on? Own production or acquisitions – how to find an effective ratio when planning a program strategy? What is that unique content that will become popular and financially successful both on the local and international markets?
Moderator – Igor Koval, Director of Television Industry Committee

A format is a TV show that crosses borders, a proven narrative structure that can be remade and enjoyed in another country and culture. Yes, it must appeal to its local audience first. But to journey beyond, it must contain the potential for foreign adaptation from the very beginning.
In this keynote address, Justin Scroggie, CCO & Partner of global consultancy The Format People, and known across the industry as The Format Doctor, will reveal 8 key ‘building blocks’ that creator-producers need in our constantly evolving business, in order to build the 'DNA' of international appeal into local formats at the development stage.
Justin uses these and other unique tools in his work as a creative consultant in countries across Europe, Asia, Africa and North America, and he will share current examples from around the world to illustrate how societal changes and trends play into the DNA of formats that travel.
‘At a time when borders are becoming barriers, and countries are looking inwards more than outwards, it has never been more important for television to bring different people together through what we share - what we laugh at, binge on, dissect on social media or around the water cooler’, – says Justin
Creating high-quality formats that reflect, inform and entertain society, sending them out into the world, and helping creators, producers and broadcasters to do the same, is what Justin does.
Come and find out how.

Today, when SVOD (subscription video on demand) platforms, which allow the viewer to interact with content at any convenient time, anywhere and on any device, are a common thing, everyone is talking about the changes in distribution methods. But Lilia Kim chose a different aspect. Namely, what opportunities all this opens for the authors.
After all, today – when the content can be created independently, tested on the Internet and delivered to the viewers around the world – a wide window of opportunities for all participants in the process of its creation is opened. And for the screenwriters – even with non-native English – as well.
Lilia Kim herself is a living example of how to really take advantage of these opportunities. A Russian screenwriter, she successfully worked for ten years on the national TV market as the author of prime-time series and co-productions, and in 2015 she received an offer to work in the USA on projects focused on international distribution.
Now she is a full member of the Writers Guild of America (West), lives and works in Los Angeles. Her job includes thinking and implementing a strategy for promoting and distributing content, in particular series, for the widest possible audience on digital platforms.
‘Among all those who promise to teach to make a living by creating stories from anywhere in the world – I have a working proof of concept. Mainly this happened because I used the same chance that there is now among people writing for Ukraine’, – says Lilia Kim. Learn about how to use your chances not only on the local, but also on the international market at her keynote at KMW 2018.

Skady will touch upon the co-production topic based on the case study of Berlin, I Love You (2018). Neil Landau will dedicate his workshop to the most burning issues of the industry. In particular, he will cover the issue of mass ‘migration’ of great filmmakers to series and will explain what they, thanks to this, get from the professional side. Also he will tell what is the difference in writing scripts for films and series, and also how artistic can be those who make series for free broadcasters with the wide audience, what are their risks and how to make TV dramas with low or middle budget. Also he will tell about prolongation of series to the next seasons. And finally he will focus on digital consumption, which is revolution in the industry.
Neil Landau's creative career is very extensive and diverse. He used to be an executive script consultant in the international divisions of Sony Pictures Television and Columbia Pictures, filmed one-hour drama pilots for CBS, ABC, ABC Family, Warner Bros., Disney, Lifetime and Fremantle, and is now developing a pilot for Netflix.
Also Mr. Landau was the scriptwriter of iconic youth projects of the 1990s – MTV's Undressed, The Secret World of Alex Mack, The Young & the Restless and, of course, Melrose Place.
In addition to that, Neil Landau is also engaged in teaching. He is an Assistant Dean of Dean's Special Programs at UCLA School of Theater, Film & Television.
He’s the author of the bestselling books: 101 Things I Learned in Film School (2010), The Screenwriter’s Roadmap (2012), The TV Showrunner’s Roadmap (2014) and TV Writing on Demand: Creating Great Content in the Digital Era (2018). His ‘roadmaps’ have been translated into 10 languages, and Neil himself holds lectures and master classes around the world.
‘Today in the television industry – with a variety of viewing interests, with the influence of VoDs – the demand for fresh new content exceeds the offer. If you are a broadcaster or a platform, it is very important to be the first with a new series, otherwise you lose. In other words, everything is moving too fast for success or failure to be predicted’, – says Neil Landau. But even in such conditions, risks can be minimized, and he will tell how to do it in his speech at KMW.
The global TV distribution business is changing fast and nowhere are these changes being felt more than in the way high-end drama is being financed and distributed. Traditional distribution companies are seeing their industry being disrupted in a big way and are finding that the pipeline of content required to feed their costly sales machinery might soon be drying up.
Ed Waller will bring up the following issues:
- how SVoD has changed everything from development to distribution
- how new models are impacting the after-market for drama
- examples of how the new models are working
- how the traditional drama models are threatened
- is there a future in traditional distribution

In the course of the discussion we will explore a new angle of view on pay-TV in Ukraine using viewer-centered approach. Are Ukrainian viewers ready to pay for pay-TV? If not everyone is ready, then it is essential to figure out, who is ready, how many and how to identify them among the mass of consumers, and why will they pay.
Furthermore, other industry matters of concern will be discussed by media market experts. What innovations will be suggested by the industry? Satellite and OTT: are they friends or foes? Would encryption discourage viewers or vice versa – attract the audience to watch high quality content? Does high quality content still need a provider? Are pay-TV and paid content synonyms? In addition, what is more important for pay-TV: actual viewing or subscription?
One of the topics of discussion will be the impact of streaming platforms on the market. We will talk about the HBO phenomenon and the questionable prospects of Netfilx in Ukraine. And also we will understand, what is the value of exploring the preferences of viewers to maximize the success of pay-TV and OTT.
Is it a single worldwide pay-TV market and will Ukrainian channels or Ukrainian content be a part of it – we'll find out the opinion of Ukrainian media market experts.

For many years, Rami Lindholm has created reality, talk shows, and documentaries, so he knows how to manage the production process. His sphere includes simple shooting using one camera, as well as directing live music shows on a global scale, such as the Eurovision song contest. He specializes in finding new ways to create television content and supporting large multimedia projects using the most advanced technologies and previously untested tools.
In the course of his workshop at KMW, Mr. Lindholm will talk about the specifics of the work of television producers and directors of large-scale live projects, in particular, software solutions that can optimize the work of a large team. He will also talk about working with Dramatify (a mobile production management platform) and Cuepilot (a software for directing live music shows) and how these two software work together.
How a switch from single-user, single-purpose software to modern cloud-based production solutions help you produce your film or TV series smarter and faster. How producers, ADs, production managers, team and cast benefit from easily accessible information when they have many (15-100) shooting days and big team. How Dramatify encourages collaboration, automates repetitive tasks and reporting – saving time and minimising risks.
‘Television and film industry has been falling for years behind other industries in terms of mobile smart interaction tools. And that's why we created Dramatify. Many production companies and broadcasters simultaneously work on projects in different genres – from dramas and series to entertainment and talk shows, from documentary programs to advertising and trailers. We understand their need for a single tool designed for specific formats and processes in our industry, and with which you can work regardless of the specifics of the content. Dramatify is exactly such a system for everyone involved in the process, including the crew and the actors’, – says Annika Lidne, CEO and co-founder of Dramatify.

Max Howard – animation guru, renowned producer and consultant from Hollywood, will deliver a workshop ‘So you wanna be a producer. А guide to producing animated features’.
“No matter the size of the budget, one can always use more. The successful producer understands the secret, it’s how you use the time and money that will lead to success – there’s never enough of either, or so we think – ‘if only’, is the call. Whereas the secret is celebrating what you do have, and then allocating those resources in the most efficient way, making sure every penny spent gets on the screen. Producing is a balance between the creative vision and the resources available – ‘that’s time and money.’ The workshop explores all aspects of becoming a successful producer, from organization to managing a creative community; from development to distributing the finished film. So you wanna be a producer or just want to understand how an animated film is made, this workshop is definitely for you”, – Max says.
Max Howard is a film producer and studio executive, based in Los Angeles. He has run studios for Walt Disney Feature Animation in London, Paris, Orlando and Los Angeles, and was president of Warner Bros. Feature Animation. Max Howard’s animation career has spanned over thirty years, serving as a studio executive and/or producer on some of the industry’s most iconic and successful films. His credits include 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit', 'Beauty and the Beast', 'The Little Mermaid', 'Aladdin', 'The Lion King' and others. This, coupled with producing and consulting on independently produced animated feature films, has given Max a unique perspective.

Today, the animation sector in Europe is rapidly developing. The European animation market, being an important part of audiovisual industries, has sufficient potential to spread its wings in the near future and become a serious independent industry. Thanks to the use of advanced technologies, animation is often the flagship of the industry development. It is the animation that first tests new business models as well.
To stimulate the growth of the animation market (initiative of CARTOON, Animation in Europe, Annecy Festival MIFA) Creative Europe MEDIA has developed the European Animation Plan in September 2017. It offers mechanisms and solutions for the development of the industry for the next five years, as well as outlines the industry's expectations. In particular, the Plan notes that in order to flourish in the future, both in the form of television content, auteur short films and full-length projects, it is necessary to unite the efforts of animation funds, studios, state institutions to:
• promote global coverage and attractiveness of the EU animation
• popularize European countries as excellent places for the work of talents from Europe and abroad
• facilitate access to financing and public international funds
In December 2017, the Ljubljana Accord was signed by the representatives of national animation associations of 19 countries of Central and Eastern Europe (from Ukraine – the Ukrainian Association of Animation) in support of the European Animation Plan. Its goal is to provide a platform for exchanging information, creating networks for cooperation between countries, as well as encouraging and supporting the growth of the sector by providing comprehensive information for both local and international audiences, which involves a number of efforts by different actors in the animation industry within the country.
What is the place of Ukraine on the European map of the animation market? What is happening in our market today?
During the roundtable discussion the following topics will be raised:
• animation as an independent audiovisual industry
• analysis of The European Animation Plan and what it can mean to Ukraine
• the state of the animation market in Ukraine: current situation, achievements, challenges (research of the Ukrainian Marketing Association initiated by Ukrainian Association of Animation UANIMA)

‘The entire crew was at the top of their game. We had immensely talented writers and storytellers, with very different life experience. Some had a background in advertising, sit com, drama, we had an Academy Award winning writer/director, and playwrights. An important rule in the writers’ room was ‘cone of silence’ which made it a very trusting space. Story often comes from the real-life experiences of the writing staff, so writers need to feel comfortable to share their intimate memories. We also expected everyone to do his or her research. Attention to detail was part of what made the show special’, – Maria and Andre Jacquemetton tell about working on Mad Men.
As part of their speech at KMW, they will reveal the secrets of the success of Mad Men and tell about the peculiarities of the showrunner's work on American channels.
