Broadcast bites back at niche cable
US cable channels could find themselves squeezed by carriage disputes similar to the recent spat between CBS and Time Warner Cable (TWC), according to former Sony exec Michael Grindon. Speaking to C21 at the Kiev Media Week, where he is the keynote speaker, Grindon said the recent CBS and TWC spat could be one of many as the main US broadcast networks seek to claw back revenue after years or losing viewers to cable and OTT services.

KMW 2013: The Ukrainian ad market has potential to reach 1.5 billion USD
The Ukrainian ad market must be worth 1.5 billion USD, with the current situation being far away from this figure because the local owners of channels have not reached agreements with each other. This is the opinion of leading media figure Alexander Rodnyanski who took part in the round table about TV and Cinema in the CIS region, part of Kiev Media Week 2013.

KMW 2013: Lithuanian format optioned in China
The original Lithuanian format 2 Minutes of Fame has been optioned in China, UK distributor New Media Vision, announced yesterday during the Format Show at Kiev Media Week 2013. The original format from TV Play saw two seasons on LNK in Lithuania between 2010 and 2011. It gives contestants a chance to showcase their talent in just two minutes. The deal marks the first ever export of a Lithuanian format in China.

The Ukrainian content industry is growing fast [1], with a new wave of original programming and formats in development. Andrew Dickens looks at the changes ahead. Its TV industry has been further stimulated by the launch of the Ukrainian Content Market, a media forum that takes place in Kiev annually. This September’s event, part of Kiev Media Week this week, looks set to attract an “increasing number of acquisitions,” according to Gleb Goncharenko, acquisition manager for the 2+2 network, part of Ukraine’s 1+1 Media Group.
