The Ukrainian cinema distribution sector is inferior to European countries’ by almost all key market indicators. This was pointed out by the head of the analytical department of Media Resources Management Artem Vakalyuk in his speech at the international “Film Business” conference held at the media forum KYIV MEDIA WEEK.
In particular, according to such indicators as number of cinema screens per 100 000 people, Ukraine is “on the margins of European civilization”, as in Ukraine this ratio is just slightly over 1.1. To compare, the same indicator in Russia is 2.74, in Turkey – 2.42, in Germany – 5.65, in Italy – 5.84, in the UK – 6.21, in Spain – 7.14, and in France – 8.78. If we compare the situation of the Ukrainian cinema distribution with that of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, as well as the Baltic states, then we can see that the comparison is just as bad. For example, in Poland the figure is 8.1, in the Czech Republic – 6, Hungary – 4.2, in Lithuania and Estonia –3.2.
One of the major market indices which characterizes the state of the cinema distribution industry is theatrical box office per capita. According to this index, our country is also in deep European rearguard, as in Ukraine, on average, each resident spends about €1.7 per year on cinema tickets. For comparison, in Turkey they spend €2.7, in Russia – €3.7, in Poland – €4.1, in the Czech Republic – €5, in Italy – €10.7, in Spain – €11.5, in Germany – €14.4, France – €20.5, in the UK – €25.9.
