On April 19, Ukrainian television industry professionals, directors of creative and production departments of TV channels and independent prodcos, producers and editors of TV programs, as well as the representatives of related fields gathered at FORMAT SHOW Spring Edition. This year the organizers have prepared very rich and interesting program. One-day conference, backed by International Partner MIPCOM, was packed with lots of sections: screenings of more than 80 fresh formats of scripted and non-scripted content of different genres from around the world; final round of SMALL WORLD.BIG IDEAS contest; face-to-face meetings where the participants of the contest were able to meet the producers; case studies on the creation of successful projects; key tips from broadcaster, producer and international distributor how to pitch the ideas; panel discussion and screening, dedicated to branded content and analysis of the best case studies of local and international creative industries and more. The key goal of FORMAT SHOW remains the development of creative industry in the CIS region, the introduction of successful international experience to local media market players, moving forward to the highest international standards, inspiration and professional communication.
Victoria Yarmoshchuk, CEO of Media Resources Management, opened FORMAT SHOW Spring Edition with the report on key trends of the global and local format industry, based on data provided by MRM Analytical Department and FremantleMedia Global Research & Insight Dept. The participants of the conference learned about the biggest format exporters and importers, which formats of TV programs and series "travel" globally and many other interesting facts. In particular, experts have analyzed the top 10 of most popular projects on the television markets of 78 countries in 2015 and found that 37% of them were entertaining shows, 35% – series and 23% – factual.
Taking into account global and local preferences of TV viewers, the organizers of FORMAT SHOW Spring Edition dedicated most of the screenings of non-scripted content to entertainment genre, presenting newest formats by Endemol Shine Group, FremantleMedia, BBC Worldwide, Talpa Global, all3media international, ITV Studios Global Entertainment, Armoza Formats, Televisa Internacional, Fuji Creative Corporation, Global Agency, Nordic World, A + E Networks international, Small World IFT, MBC Global Media, Sky Vision and many others.
Another screening section was dedicated to scripted content, and presented to the audience the selection of newest and most trendy series from catalogues of BBC Worldwide, Armoza Formats, FremantleMedia, Content Media Corporation, Cineflix Rights, ESG, KBS International, DR International and others.
During the final round of SMALL WORLD. BIG IDEAS – the contest for creators and producers with innovative concepts for new non-scripted entertainment formats - five finalists pitched their ideas to the international expert committee – President of Small World IFT Tim Crescenti (USA), CIS & Baltics Sales Director at FremantleMedia Anne Kirsipuu (Estonia) and Producer at FILM.UA Anna Eliseeva (Ukraine).
Right before the pitching session, Chief producer at Novy TV channel (Ukraine) Sergiy Evdokimov, Founder & General producer of Friends Production (Ukraine) Oleksii Goncharenko and President of Small World IFT (USA) Tim Crescenti shared their experience and gave practical tips to creators and producers during the panel discussion HOW TO PITCH YOUR IDEA: key tips from broadcaster, producer and international distributor.
The final round gathered five contestants: independent producer from Ukraine Galina Betsko, who presented the format Made in Garage; TV presenter from Israel Lital Shemesh with the project Come to Bed; Ukrainian TV producers Vyacheslav Garmash and Yasya Gudym with their show The Dream School; Russian writer and director Vladimir Solodovnikov with New Robinson; and Ukrainian producer Pavel Shport, presenting his project Summer School. International jury decided to pick Lital Shemesh as the winner and award her with a unique set of prizes from partners of the competition – exclusive partnership with the international distributor Small World IFT and participant’s badge to attend MIPCOM (October 2016, Cannes, France).
Other short-listed contestants of SMALL WORLD. BIG IDEAS contest had an opportunity to present their ideas to international distributors, representatives of the Ukrainian TV channels and the leading prodcos during face-to-face meetings.
FORMAT SHOW Spring Edition continued with a special section dedicated to branded content. Andrey Partyka, CEO of Starlight Sales and StarLight Brand Content, Oksana Stekhina, Director of business development at Dentsu Aegis Network Ukraine and Yaroslav Mudryak, Strategist of integrated projects at Dentsu Aegis Network Ukraine hosted the workshop on how to create content for sponsor money, international experience and its implementation in Ukraine. The organizers have prepared a selection of successful international examples of brands integration into television projects in partnership with the British media consulting company K7 Media.
Due to the rapid technological breakthrough and the spread of the Internet in all spheres of life, television content has gone far beyond TV sets, and its distribution as well as interaction with the viewers are in search of new ways of development every day. In this regard the event organizers invited Jeroen Doucet, MD and founder of ComingNextTV, the strategy and concept unit of Ex Machina Group, faculty member of Entertainment Master Class, to share his expertise in this field with FORMAT SHOW Spring Edition participants. During his presentation BEST PRACTICES FOR MULTISCREEN FORMAT CREATION, the expert told about the prerequisites for creating transmedia formats, the need for multiple platforms, the shift of TV audiences to the online world as well as the recipes of creating successful cross-platform projects.
In the end of the day the educational part of FORMAT SHOW Spring Edition program was supplemented by Elwin de Groot, Senior Development Executive at Armoza Formats (Israel), who told about 13 important components of a successful TV format during his presentation THE SECRET TO CREATING A HIT TV FORMAT.
