As part of the discussion panel International Co-production in Europe. Trends and Opportunities held on KIEV CoProductionMeetings on September 8, participants discussed ways of co-financing projects, talked about the most popular genres of serial production in Europe, about the popularity of such genre as crime drama and about the way the international market participants see the Ukrainian documentaries.

Managing Editor of TV channel ARTE France, Mark Edwards told about his experience as a producer working on the four Ukrainian films, including one of  Serhiy Bukovsky's works. He noted that in Ukraine there is a strong photographic tradition, and one of the important strategies to ensure the success of documentary films is to use bright dramatic narrative lines and characters.

On the other hand ARTE editor believes that one of the trends in documentary filmmaking nowadays is the usage of it as an analytical tool. "Today our channel use documentary films to give the viewer some clues to understand the reality - including social and economic problems," - says Mark Edwards. According to him emotional image is not enough for a good film, the European viewer needs to understand the conflict, which he sees on the screen.
