Seven ‘sins’ ideal to be adapted when buying foreign scripted formats from Keri Lewis Brown

8 September 2015, 10:37

In the course of FORMAT SHOW, which was held on 7th September in Hyatt Regency Kyiv, Keri Lewis Brown, UK-based K7 Media managing director, told that sometimes while importing foreign scripted formats one should pay more attention to the characters instead of the story itself. The characters, their life stories and relations with others may be used for adaptation. Of course, if it is agreed upon with the distributor and right holder.

First of all she named the seven ‘sins’ ideal to be adapted when buying foreign scripted formats – envy, pride, lust, greed, wrath, sloth and gluttony. She also gave a few examples of already successful and promising TV series. Among them Norwegian Mammon (a journalist who puts his own brother in ward, when finds out the last is a fraud artist), South-Korean Last (a man loses everything and tries to live in the street), Danish Norskov (the main hero returns to his hometown and realizes that his relatives are running the drug business) and The Last Tango in Halifax (an old man decides to marry his school love, but his children are obviously not that happy).

Well-acted situations around the certain characters may add drama to the story, which may be completely changed in accordance with the local market requirements. That is the characters that may be used as the basis of the spin-off.
