About Competition on the Ukrainian TV Market at KMW Press Conference

7 September 2015, 13:25

During the press conference, which opened the V International Media Forum KYIV MEDIA WEEK, the marketing director of VOLIA company Viktoriya Tsomaya and the member of The National Council of Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine Grigory Shverk discussed the conditions in which the Ukrainian TV market will emerge from the crisis and will be able to increase its volume.

According to Vladimir Borodyanskiy, television in Ukraine can be profitable if the current level of competition will be reduced. "The size of the Ukrainian market currently stands at 2.5 billion UAH – it`s about $120 million. Today four media groups are operating in Ukraine. I hope that we will evolutionary come to the situation, when the market will have only two media groups, as well as separate profitable for broadcasters Pay-TV market – these will correct the structure of the media industry".

The head of StarLightMedia also noted that the company is suffering losses due to the situation when it is obliged to cover transmission fees both for analog and digital terrestrial signal. "In Ukraine, the process of transition to digital broadcasting has already dragged on for more than three years. Every year we spend about 80 million UAH only to transmit our signal both in analogue and in digital," - he said. The media manager is sure that it is impossible to build the market without profound changes in the industry – Ukrainian authorities must apply the mechanisms which are already operating around the world, including cash rebate for producers.
