Ukrainian Films Participate in the 67th Cannes Film Festival

The 67^th Cannes international film festival is held on May 14-25. Worth mentioning that this year Ukraine is represented by a range of films in festival’s official selection.

Thus documentary Maïdan directed by Sergey Loznitsa is screened at special screenings section. Feature film The Tribe (Plemya) by Myroslav Slaboshpytskiy is selected for The Critics' Week (La Semaine de la Critique) program which is one of the parallel programs of Cannes film festival. The film is nominated for Golden Camera award (Caméra d’or) given to the best feature debut. The prize will be presented to the winner during the Awards Ceremony on Saturday May 24. By the way international rights for both Maïdan and The Tribe are sold by France based sales agents at the film market.

Three Ukrainian short films – The Ordinary Things by Oleksandr Ratiy, Yin, and What to Do with It by Myroslava Khoroshun, Subscriber by Maryna Artemenko – participate Short Film Corner as well as two more short films coproduced by Ukrainian filmmakers - Love Changes (USA, Ukraine) by Jane Kapriss and Balazher and Korrekturen der Wirklichkeit (Switzerland, Ukraine) by Lesia Kordonets. Sergei Parajanov’s restored picture Color of the Pomegranate is screened in the course of Cannes Classics program.

Ukrainian National Pavilion works at Cannes film market Marché du Film held on May 14-23. Obviously Ukrainian cinema develops and triggers more and more interest internationally. At the same time there are only few film industry events taking place in Ukraine. Worth mentioning that international conference and workshop Film Business: Challenges, Features, Opportunities which is held annually in the course of KYIV MEDIA WEEK forum is the largest platform for meeting and communication of film industry professionals in the region. This September international experts will share their experience in film production funding and legal support as well as international coproduction and distribution at the workshops during Film Business conference.
