17 March 2014, 14:03

The 2014 edition of the international content market DISCOP ISTANBUL closed its doors on March 6th. The event became a foothold for the launch of UKRAINIAN PAVILION initiated and organized by media consulting company Media Resources Management (MRM).

Istanbul market’s key peculiarity is the geography of its participants representing territories of Middle East, Western and Central Asia, Gulf countries and Northern Africa. In 2014 DISCOP ISTANBUL organizers witnessed 33% increase in attendance – more than 1100 representatives from 67 territories took part in the market. Total number of registered buyers exceeds previous edition’s figures by 52%.

UKRAINIAN PAVILION worked for three days from Tuesday, March 4th, to Thursday, March 6th. The representatives of TV channels Ukraine, 1+1, STB, film company FILM.UA Group, animation studio Animagrad, prodcos Activ Vision, Kvartal-95 Studio and OK Media as well as Rost Group acted as the hosts and presented the pavilion’s visitors wide range of content (including scripted and non-scripted formats, TV series and shows, animation, TV movies, docudramas, etc) as well as production facilities and services of Ukrainian prodcos. Special emphasis was made on discovering new opportunities for international coproduction in Ukraine.

Due to the successful launch of UKRAINIAN PAVILION at DISCOP ISTANBUL Ukraine was represented as a promising partner internationally. Ukrainian companies have got opportunity to enter new markets and find new partners from the territories of Middle East, Asia, Gulf countries and Northern Africa. Ukrainian TV content, formats and services drew a great interest of buyers and potential partners from neighboring countries within the former Soviet Union (Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan) and beyond (Lebanon, Turkey, India). So, the hosts of UKRAINIAN PAVILION had three days of active work and networking.

FILM.UA Distribution representative Elena Malkova comments: “DISCOP ISTANBUL for FILM.UA Distribution is first of all an opportunity to discover to new markets. FILM.UA Group produces content that may draw the interest of the audience from across the globe. We have positive experience of cooperation with European companies as well as Asian ones. Market participants (e.g. from Turkey, UAE, Georgia, Estonia, Romania and other countries) were interested in our content. This fact is a yet more proof that content produced by FILM.UA Group is of a great international potential. A special interest of the visitors was shown for such projects as THE HISTORY OF CRIMINALISTICS and GREAT DREAMERS as well as animated series ESKIMO GIRL”.

Another FILM.UA Group representative - Kateryna Vyshnevska, along with her work at the content market participated in DISCOP conference program. Discussing opportunities of creating international formats based on successful local products with her colleagues from Turkish and European prodcos Katerina spoke on the case of crime series THE SNIFFER. The first season of the series premiered in Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan and Israel. Having received high ratings on those territories THE SNIFFER has successfully started its travel around the world both as finished product and scripted format.

“For us DISCOP ISTANBUL is an attractive content market, all the more so because we still study the markets of Middle East and Northern Africa territories. Though local markets’ players still develop they are strong and have a great potential (for example, Turkey with its rather mature advertising market).  Also we had a great chance to share our experience in the course of panel discussion dedicated to international opportunities of local products”, - Kateryna Vyshnevska told.

“Content produced by 1+1 Media caught the interest of our colleagues from many countries, in particular Turkey, Bulgaria, Italy, Croatia. We believe that this will initiate fruitful cooperation with companies from beyond CIS and Baltic territories as well as generate positive buzz on international markets”, –  says Inna Filipova, Head of Distribution Department, 1+1 Media.

“Certainly, DISCOP ISTANBUL is a new direction for development of the Ukraine channels’ international sales (both finished programs and scripted formats). We took our chance to learn firsthand information about the needs of the new territories. Speaking about the results, first of all we expect confirmation of deals with broadcasters from CIS territories. At the same time companies from Middle East (Turkey, UAE) as well as EU (Italy, UK) were also interested in our content. By the way, we greatly appreciate the organization of work at UKRAINIAN PAVILION that allowed accumulating a large number of meetings with potential buyers on a single venue as well as sharing professional opinions with our colleagues”, – comments Grygoriy Tychyna, Chief Executive Producer of Ukraine TV Channel.

“Visiting DISCOP ISTANBUL was interesting especially from the point of receiving updated information on new developing markets and potential partners. We had a number of meetings regarding coproduction opportunities, the range of production services we provide as well as animation projects of Animagrad studio. Besides Postmodern Digital (our VFX production branch) team’s works were highly prized” – says Egor Olesov, CEO of Animagrad animation Studio.

“DISCOP ISTANBUL content market is the place to find partners from Middle East, Western and Central Asia territories. The sellers are the first to benefit from participating in DISCOP ISTANBUL– they definitely can find clients for their content here. Prodcos have an opportunity to expand their clients base for their services on postproduction, sound and visual design as well as animation production. For OK Media and me personally, meeting Turkish content producers and distributors became a rewarding experience”, – noted Oksana Kucherova, OK Media CEO.

UKRAINIAN PAVILION was powered by international media forum KYIV MEDIA WEEK (organized by MRM company) in partnership with BASIC LEAD (DISCOP markets organizers).

Visiting DISCOP ISTANBUL MRM representatives Victoria Yarmoshchuk and Kateryna Udut had a range of meetings with active and potential participants of KYIV MEDIA WEEK 2014. They made presentations of Ukrainian Content Market novelties and advantages for the forum participants. Many of the KYIV MEDIA WEEK partners and clients expressed their readiness to join this year’s forum as well as their support to players of Ukrainian media market. Thanks to MRM’s activity at UKRAINIAN PAVILION some more world territories will be represented at KYIV MEDIA WEEK 2014.
